CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“You cannot imagine how relieved I was when the judge said you were free to go.”

“Believe me, I can.” Bowie turned to look at her and they both laughed.

When they arrived back at the ranch, Bowie didn’t want to go straight into the house. He wanted to walk around outside and see the trees, the stars, the horses, illuminated by the nearly full moon.

“High Pastures Ranch has really got a hold on me, much like the lovely lady who owns it.” He slipped his arms around her waist and planted a warm kiss on her lips. “I’ve been to a lot of places in my life, but I’ve never wanted to go back to any of them as much as I’ve longed to come back here. I felt lost without you, Lucy.”

Bowie cupped Lucy’s face in his hands. He kissed her eyelids, her forehead, her cheeks, her chin, then finally her mouth, which opened to his, their tongues winding around each other as their arms reached for each other.

Bowie’s hands roved up and down her back, pulling up the jacket of her suit and the blouse she was wearing, anxious to feel her warm skin. He sighed with honest relief and she felt herself relaxing for the first time in weeks, letting herself go, allowing herself to fall into Bowie’s arms and feel safe.

Their kisses grew longer and deeper, their mouths covering each other, tasting and sucking, drinking in each other’s hunger and longing.

At last Bowie drew back from her an inch or two, and Lucy opened her eyes. His green eyes roved over her face, so
